Reefs and the Comfort of Not Caring

For many people, their first encounter with a coral reef happens underwater.

Mine happened on a living room wall.

As a child growing up for a time in Trinidad, it seemed that almost every house I visited had the same object mounted somewhere on the wall: a delicate fan coral. Whenever I asked where it came from, the answer was almost always the same.

Tobago

At the time I had no real understanding of what a reef was. I only knew that this strange, fragile-looking structure had come from somewhere beneath the sea, and that people brought it home from Tobago the way someone might bring back a shell from a beach.

It was my first introduction to coral.

A few years later, back in Tobago, an aunt took me on a trip to Little Tobago. On the way there the boat stopped in the channel between the village of Speyside and Little Tobago, known as the Kelleston Drain. We were on a glass-bottom boat, and through the pane beneath our feet the sea opened up into an entirely different and fantastically mesmerizing world.

Below us sat an enormous brain coral.

Someone on the boat exclaimed that it was the largest brain coral in the Western Hemisphere.

That small detail immediately captured my attention and filled me with a quiet sense of pride.

Seen through the glass beneath our feet, the scale of it was astonishing, especially to a child's eyes. The coral looked ancient, like something that had been quietly growing there for centuries.

Beyond the walking trails and the heat of the afternoon sun, I remember very little about the rest of that excursion to Little Tobago. As the saying goes, youth is wasted on the young.

But the image of that brain coral has stayed with me ever since.

Memories like that create the sense that reefs are permanent.

Yet anyone who has spent time studying Tobago's marine ecosystems knows that reefs are far more fragile than they appear.

Over the past several decades, subtle changes have become noticeable in places like Buccoo Reef. The reef is still there. Boats still arrive. Visitors still marvel at the water. But the kaleidoscope of colours and density of life that once stunned first-time visitors before the turn of the century is not quite the same today.

The change has been gradual, and such change is easy to ignore.

What the Trained Eye Notices

Most people swimming over a reef see colour and fish.

Marine scientists see something different.

They look for the quieter biological signals that reveal a reef's health. They notice how corals compete for space, sometimes slowly overgrowing one another in a silent battle for territory. In some cases, even the types of coral present can reveal the reef's condition. An overabundance of fire coral, for example, can signal a disturbed ecosystem, while lower abundance may indicate a healthier reef environment.

They also watch the growth of sponges and keep an eye out for early signs of bleaching, when warming seas cause corals to expel the tiny algae that give them colour and sustain them.

To the casual observer, bleaching may simply look like lighter coral.

To someone trained to read a reef, it signals stress.

In recent years, large mats of sargassum seaweed drifting westward from the tropical Atlantic into the Caribbean have created new pressures on coastal ecosystems, sometimes smothering reefs and blocking the sunlight corals depend on.

The Small Things That Matter

Much of the damage reefs experience does not come from dramatic events.

It comes from ordinary behaviour.

Something as simple as stepping on coral can have lasting consequences. Coral may look like rock, but it is a living organism that grows extremely slowly. One careless step can destroy years of growth.

The most significant pressures on reefs begin far from the water.

Activities on land, particularly construction, road work, and land clearing, can release large amounts of silt into the landscape. During heavy rainfall, that sediment is carried into streams and eventually into coastal bays.

Indiscriminate dumping can also introduce pollutants into the environment, from household garbage discarded in ravines to chemicals poured into drains, all of which can eventually make their way into waterways and coastal ecosystems.

Once in the sea, the silt clouds the water and settles over coral colonies, reducing sunlight and placing additional stress on reefs already coping with warming seas.

Unlike sand on a beach we can brush from our skin, coral cannot rid itself of the sediment that settles over it.

This is why development planning matters. Without measures to contain or trap sediment before it reaches watercourses, even routine construction can quietly but significantly affect reef health.

Another issue that continues to surface in discussions about reef health is wastewater management. Studies going back decades have highlighted how untreated or poorly treated sewage entering coastal waters can contribute to the decline of ecosystems like the Buccoo Reef Complex. While infrastructure upgrades in south-west Tobago have improved wastewater treatment in recent years, environmental groups and researchers continue to raise concerns about whether treatment capacity can keep pace with development in the region, and the long-term impact of nutrient pollution on reef health.

📌 Note Nutrient pollution occurs when excess nitrogen and phosphorus enter coastal waters, often from sewage, fertilizers, or stormwater runoff, stimulating algae growth that can overwhelm coral reefs.

Tourism and the Reef Economy

Tobago's reefs are more than natural beauty.

They are economic infrastructure.

The island's economy relies heavily on tourism, and its natural resources are among the strongest attractions for visitors. Reefs in particular draw people to Tobago's waters.

Glass-bottom boat tours.
Snorkeling excursions.
Dive operations.
Guesthouses and restaurants.

Healthy reefs support them all.

Protecting reefs, therefore, is quintessentially part of tourism itself.

Reasons for Hope

Despite the challenges, there are reasons for cautious optimism.

Tobago benefits from a number of groups and institutions that actively advocate for marine protection. Research organizations such as the Institute of Marine Affairs continue to study reef conditions, while conservation groups including Environment Tobago, Coral Reef Research Institute and SpeSeas work to raise awareness about protecting the island's marine ecosystems.

Younger generations may approach these issues differently. With greater access to information and the reach of social media, awareness can spread quickly.

Information travels faster than ever.

And awareness, when shared widely enough, has the potential to translate into action.

A Shared Responsibility

Since land-based activities can severely impact coral reef health, the reef is not someone else's responsibility.

It is everyone's: visitors, residents, and developers.

We all play a role.

Even small choices matter.

Before entering the water, the reminder is simple:

Keep it Clean, Green, and Serene.

Reefs are more than scenery.
They support marine life and human livelihoods.

And for many Tobagonians, they are part of childhood memories and island identity.

For generations, children growing up in coastal villages learned to free dive along the reefs, sometimes with little more than homemade spear guns, catching fish and lobster in waters that felt both familiar and abundant.

That connection to the sea should always matter.

Looking Forward

Reefs have endured stress before.

Seasonal sediment flows from the Orinoco.
Past coral bleaching events.
Storm damage.

They are resilient ecosystems, but that resilience has limits and should never be taken for granted. Rising ocean temperatures, combined with local pressures, could eventually push reefs beyond what they can recover from.

The good news is that many of the solutions are not complicated.

They are small disciplines practiced consistently.

  • Choosing not to step on coral.
  • Managing development responsibly.
  • Keeping waterways clean.

Protecting Tobago's reefs does not require dramatic gestures.

It simply requires caring enough to stop ignoring the small things.
